Merging cosmology, myth, and materials, Pannaphan Yodmanee creates contemporary frescoes that contemplate impermanence and faith.

Born in 1988 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, Pannaphan Yodmanee is a contemporary artist whose practice fuses sacred tradition with experimental form. Trained from childhood in temple mural restoration and later at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, she built a foundation in Buddhist iconography before expanding into installation and mixed media. Her large-scale works layer rocks, minerals, jute, cement, spray paint, and gold foil with painting, carving, and engraving, creating fresco-like surfaces that evoke both ruin and renewal. By bringing together the textures of archaeology with the language of sacred art, she produces environments where history and spirituality are reimagined through contemporary materiality.

Yodmanee’s work reflects on time, memory, and impermanence through cosmology and myth, bridging Buddhist traditions with global references, including Western biblical imagery. Her installation Aftermath (Singapore Biennale, 2016), awarded the 11th Benesse Prize, epitomized her vision of cyclical destruction and rebirth, while later works such as The Last Day (2018) and Quarterly Myth (2019, Lyon Biennale) expanded her exploration of faith’s endurance in fragile worlds. Today, her works are held in major collections including the Singapore Art Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, and Yuz Museum. Through this synthesis of sacred painting techniques and contemporary detritus, Yodmanee creates contemplative compositions that are at once archaeological and visionary, inviting reflection on spirituality in a time of constant change.
