Reworking ancestral Bornean textile traditions through the language of graphic design and contemporary popular culture, Marcos Kueh creates woven worlds that question how identity, heritage, and cultural imagery are transformed by modernity.
Reworking ancestral Bornean textile traditions through the language of graphic design and contemporary popular culture, Marcos Kueh creates woven worlds that question how identity, heritage, and cultural imagery are transformed by modernity.
Working primarily with industrial digital weaving and jacquard production, his works bring together ancestral motifs, Chinese and Southeast Asian symbols, pop culture, typography, graphic patterns, and imagery drawn from contemporary life. His densely layered tapestries collapse distinct visual languages into a single surface, where inherited symbols sit alongside the codes of branding, tourism, consumer culture, and mass communication. Informed by his education in graphic and textile design during his time in the Netherlands, he returns to the textiles and visual practices of his homeland as a way of reconnecting with the myths, stories, and cultural memory of Borneo. The woven image becomes a site of preservation and a site of transformation, where traditional forms are detached from their original contexts and reassembled through the visual grammar of advertising and popular culture.
