Yuka Numata transforms pixelated glitches into beaded mosaics.

Born in Chiba in 1992 and based between Tokyo and Chiba, Yuka Numata is an artist whose practice bridges the digital and physical worlds. A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022, with further studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, she explores the fluid space between two- and three-dimensional forms. Using software such as Photoshop, Numata deliberately generates digital glitches and pixel errors, which she then meticulously reconstructs in physical space. By arranging thousands of plastic beads into precise grids, she transforms fleeting distortions of the screen into sculptural surfaces, shifting immaterial errors into objects of permanence.

Numata’s works operate at the threshold of the tangible and virtual, examining how imperfections in digital images can reveal both fragility and possibility. Her semi-3D installations highlight misalignments and overlaps between digital artifacts and material reality, prompting viewers to reflect on perception and representation in an increasingly hybrid world. Through this dialogue, she repositions glitches not as failures but as generative forces, opening new ways to imagine futures shaped by the entanglement of technology and human experience.
