Tomiyuki Kaneko creates paintings where deities and yōkai confront the human imagination.
Tomiyuki Kaneko creates paintings where deities and yōkai confront the human imagination.
Born in Saitama in 1978 and based in Yamagata, Tomiyuki Kaneko brings mythological and spiritual imagination to life through grand, intricately detailed compositions. Fascinated since childhood by deities, yōkai, and unseen forces in nature, he channels these encounters into paintings that balance reverence, awe, and intensity. Working with mineral pigments, ink, shell powder, and gold leaf, Kaneko constructs monumental surfaces where folklore, Shintō legends, and Buddhist and Hindu cosmologies converge. His practice expands the language of painting into a realm that is both material and metaphysical, offering visions that immerse viewers in the presence of gods, demons, and spirits.

Kaneko’s pursuit of the unseen has led him across Asia, from sacred temples to ancient sites, experiences that deepen the spiritual resonance of his work. Exhibitions such as Raging Gods (2017) and Apotropaic Deities (2023) have revealed his ability to stage environments of overwhelming scale, where mythic beings confront the viewer with striking immediacy. His ceiling panels for Izumo Taisha Shrine in Ibaraki further highlight his dialogue with sacred space and tradition. Honored with the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Overseas Study Program and recognized as a finalist for the Nikkei Nihonga Award, Kaneko continues to create works that fuse folklore, theology, and artistic mastery into enduring visions of the otherworldly.
